- Exams and checkups every six months
- Professional cleanings and X-rays
- Fluoride treatments
- Sealants on permanent molars
- Fillings and crowns for decayed or broken teeth
- Nerve treatment
- Tooth extractions
- Emergency care for dental pain or infection
- Sedation when medically necessary
Some treatments need approval from your child's dental plan before they begin. Our team sends that request for you and lets you know as soon as we hear back.
How Medi-Cal dental plans work in Sacramento County
In Sacramento County, most Medi-Cal members get their dental care through a Medi-Cal dental managed care plan.
Children's benefits are generally the same in every plan. Each plan has its own network of dentists and assigns your child a dental office. Call us with your child's plan name and member ID, and we'll confirm coverage before the visit. If we aren't your child's assigned dentist yet, the number on your plan ID card is the place to ask about changing it.
Need to check or change your child's dental plan? Call Medi-Cal Health Care Options at (800) 430-4263 (TTY 1-800-430-7077). The state's member website, SmileCalifornia.org, also explains children's dental benefits.
Not enrolled yet? How to apply for Medi-Cal
Children and teens may qualify for Medi-Cal based on household size and income. Dental coverage is included automatically, so there's no separate dental application.
You can apply online, by phone, by mail or in person with Sacramento County. The California Department of Health Care Services explains every option on its How to Apply for Medi-Cal page. Once your child is enrolled, call us and we'll help you get the first visit on the calendar.
What to expect at your child's first visit
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit by age one. At Kids Dentist Plus, a first Medi-Cal visit usually includes:
- A friendly welcome and time for your child to get comfortable
- A gentle exam of the teeth, gums and bite
- A cleaning and fluoride treatment when appropriate
- X-rays only if your child needs them
- Tips for brushing, snacks and bottle or sippy-cup habits
- A clear plan for any treatment, explained before it starts
